Summer is More Fun at Hartwick’s Yager Museum
ONEONTA, NY—Hartwick College’s Yager Museum of Art & Culture begins its series of popular summer craft programs for children this Wednesday, June 26, from noon to 3 p.m.
Summer Crafternoons allow children to explore their creativity in the setting of the Museum galleries. The Museum will set up craft tables filled with all the supplies needed for kids to make something brilliant and beautiful! Snacks will also be available to help power participants’ creativity.
Summer Crafternoons are free and no reservation is needed. An adult will be required to accompany children during the programs, however.
Each week, there will be a new theme and some supplies specific to that theme, but budding artists may make any kind of art they choose. This season’s upcoming weekly themes are:
· July 17 – Paper Chain
· July 24 – Ships
· July 31 – Pots
Several exhibitions will also be on view at the Yager during the summer. The Yager is the Oneonta area’s only museum of art and culture. It is open Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June 1 through July 31, after which it will be open by appointment only until the start of the College’s Fall Term. During the summer, the Museum is closed Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and College holidays. Admission is free and parking is available near the entrance on the first floor of Yager Hall. To reach the Museum, take West Street to Clinton Street and turn right onto Cayuga Drive. Follow Cayuga Drive to Yager Hall. Parking is available adjacent to the Museum entrance.
For more information on The Yager and these exhibitions, visit the museum’s website [https://www.hartwick.edu/campus-life/arts-culture/yager-museum/]or Facebook page [https://www.facebook.com/yagermuseum/], call 607-431-4480, or e-mail Kendall at email@example.com.
Sunday July 14: Related to the Oneonta Theatre exhibition, Alan Donovan and Gary Wickham will host Kitchen Table Conversations (KTC) beginning at 2 PM. All are invited to share their memories of the Oneonta Theatre. The program will be recorded for posterity as another in the KTC series, to be listened to later at http://www.oneontahistory.org/words.htm. The History Center will be open 1 to 4 PM.
Thursday July 18 to Saturday July 20: GOHS will be participating in downtown sidewalk sales, selling used books and postcards and other ephemera, 12 noon to 4 PM each day. Rain location inside the Oneonta History Center.
Wednesday July 24: GOHS will have a walking tour of historic River Street, beginning at 7 PM. Join native "lower deckers" for a nostalgic walk along one of Oneonta's most historic streets. The tour will begin at the intersection of River and Main, where the village of Milfordville that became the city of Oneonta began. From there the walk moves west, near the Wilcox farm and through the 6th Ward neighborhood. There is parking in nearby Neahwa Park. This tour is by donation.
Sunday July 28: As part of the Broadway Revealed: Behind the Theater Curtain show at Hartwick's Foreman Gallery, photographer Stephen Joseph and theater aficionado Patrice Macaluso will lead a "guided tour" through the show's photographs, beginning at 3 PM. This collaborative event of Hartwick and GOHS is by donation. Photographed over an eight-year period, Broadway Revealed offers a behind-the-scenes look at what went into creating some of the most well-known theatrical productions, including "Chicago," "American Idiot," "Hair," and "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."
Continuing in July: Broadway Revealed at Foreman Gallery is open Thursdays to Sundays 2 PM to 8 PM, and is presented by Hartwick with support from GOHS. Visitors will find on display even more photos than appear in Stephen Joseph's book Broadway Revealed: Behind the Theater Curtain. Admission is free. GOHS is providing staffing on Friday July 12 and Friday July 19. The last day of the show is Saturday August 11.
Opening in July: "Oneonta's Own: The State Militia & National Guard in Oneonta, 1812-2003" is returning to Oneonta, in part. Courtney Burns, director of military history at the NYS Military Museum, is installing a version of the Center's 2018 exhibition in the display case in the lobby at City Hall. The display will include artifacts from the Oneonta Armory and is expected to be on view through the end of the year.
Oneonta Outlaws: Thanks to owner Gary Laing, GOHS has free Outlaws tickets, while supplies last, for Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League games at Damaschke Field. The season runs through July.
