Classic Rock, Scott Ambrose, Rich Barberio, Eric Fayer, Bob McKeo...with special guest Paul Carter on piano. Formed in the mid-1980s in Oneonta, NY, Unclaimed Freight was a longtime favorite for the area’s fans of the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Frank Zappa, Neil Young, the Talking Heads and many other groups that love to play music for the peak moments shared with an audience. The Freight’s original songs paid tribute to these influences and helped to cement the group as one of Oneonta’s premier bands of the late 1980s. The band ended its run at the end of 1989, but the core members reunited in the fall of 2016 for a reunion show and are returning to the B-Side to continue the journey with their fans.

Singer-Songwriter Dylan Hicks

Community Arts Network of Oneonta presents a performance at the historic Wilber Mansion by singer-songwriter and novelist Dylan Hicks, who will accompany himself on the mansion’s Kawai baby grand and on guitar.

Hicks will mainly perform songs from his new album, Ad Out, produced by John Munson, best known as a member of the rock group Semisonic. Hicks’s tuneful and literate songs will perhaps call to mind various piano-playing singer-songwriters of the seventies, though they’re broadly informed by rock, jazz, blues, country, and pop. His previous album, a companion to his 2012 debut novel, earned an A minus from the influential critic Robert Christgau. His fiction has also been acclaimed (“a wonderful, meticulous author,” said the Los Angeles Times of Hicks’s most recent novel, Amateurs), and his songs, though not always directly tied to his fiction, are typically sung in character and have strong narratives. His journalism, essays, and word puzzles have appeared in the New York Times, the Village Voice, the Guardian, Slate, the Paris Review Daily, and elsewhere.

For more about Hicks, see https://www.dylanhicks.com/. To preview or purchase his music, visit https://dylan-hicks.bandcamp.com/. Or watch his latest video, directed by Carolyn Swiszcz and Wilson Webb:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8ehAjLZP18.

John Scarpulla

BLUES, SOUL & ROCK & ROLL $7

John & his band featuring: Brian Shafer, Daniel Colon, Conor Murphy, Amar Sastry, Kristina Johnson (Sax), Gary Licalzi (Trumpet) & Sebastian Green

John Scarpulla has been writing and singing songs since the early 1990's in New York City. Trolling bars and subway stations throughout the city, countless open mics and feature slots at some of the fabled and now defunct haunts such as Sinead and McGovern's, Scarpulla moved the show to The capitol region of Upstate New York and in 2009 began a new musical journey with close friend and musical familiar Brian Shafer. The two have shared stages with the likes of new Riders of the Purple Sage and kansas. Scarpulla and Shafer have toured extensively throughout the North east ande Pac North West bringing a burnished groove of Blues, Soul, Country tinged rock Americana and roll. The combination of Scarpullas soulfully textured, smokey voice with Shafer's tastefully expressive, thoughtful guitar playing make for a powerful musical experience.

The Jug Hates Cancer

We here at the Red Jug Pub in Oneonta NY are proud to announce our partnership with The St. Baldricks Foundation in an effort to raise the awareness of Childhood Cancer, as well as give them as much financial support as possible. On Saturday October 14th beginning at 1pm, and running until 3pm, we will be holding an event at our location at 195 Main Street in Oneonta. We are asking for as much support from the local community and media as possible, as the majority of us have in some way, directly or indirectly, been affected by cancer. This means that we not only need donations and volunteers, but people willing to shave their heads in solidarity with those who are currently battling this deadly disease. Those that shave their head will also acquire sponsors who will in turn donate in their name. In the end we hope not only to donate a large sum of money to those that truly need it at this time, but help St. Baldricks in the very real mission
to conquer childhood cancer once and for all.

Those that are interested in participating can visit https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/RedJugPubONEONTA2017, contact me directly via email at andrew.slocum.as@gmail.com, or stop in personally and pick up a donation form. Please support this St. Baldricks shaving event for childhood cancer with your promotion. All help is mentioned. We thank you all in advance for your interest and assistance in this very worthy cause!

Seneca Falls Bus Trip

The Greater Oneonta Historical Society (GOHS) is sponsoring a full-day trip to Seneca Falls on Thursday October 5, 2017. This trip in a Hale Transportation bus includes tours of the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women’s Rights National Historical Park, and will end with wine tasting at the Montezuma Winery.
Tour organizer Marjorie Pietraface says, "Seneca Falls is famous for its part in the women’s rights movement. It is the site of the first Women’s Rights Convention. Even though women’s suffrage was first proposed in the United States Senate in 1878, it took until August 26, 1920, for women to gain the full right to vote. In 2017 Seneca Falls is celebrating the 100th anniversary of women obtaining the right to vote in New York State."

Registration forms are available at www.OneontaHistory.org and at the History Center at 183 Main Street, Oneonta. The cost of the trip is $90.00. The registration deadline is September 18. Part of the $90.00 registration will be a donation to GOHS. For more information, call tour organizers Bill and Marge Pietraface at (607) 432-1385.

The Sweetback Sisters Supper Club

The Sweetback Sisters Supper Club

Technically speaking, The Sweetback Sisters come from Brooklyn, but philosophically, they hail from a parallel universe, an alternate timeline in which honky-tonk became the dominant sound in modern country music. On their new album, ‘King Of Killing Time,’ the Sisters push their timely take on country’s golden age into more adventurous territory than ever before, with airtight harmonies, blazing leads, charging rhythms, and playful lyrics. Centered around the charismatic vocal interplay of Emily Miller and Zara Bode, the record’s ten tracks are a mix of infectious originals and unexpected interpretations of everything from George Jones to Gram Parsons. Hints of jazz and ragtime flesh out the group’s unique brand of Americana, as Miller, Bode, and their remarkably versatile band (guitarist Ryan Hommel, fiddler Ben Sanders, bassist Jason Sypher, and drummer Stefan Amidon) conjure up a singular blend of heart, humor, and virtuosic musicianship.

Hailed as "brilliant" by NBC New York, The Sweetback Sisters first emerged in 2007 with their debut EP, 'Bang!' The collection earned them a record deal with stalwart indie label Signature Sounds, and over the course of three ensuing albums, the band built a dedicated following in the US and Europe and racked up a heap of critical acclaim. The New Yorker raved that the women are "strong singers who revel in close harmonies," while Sing Out! said that their music "bristles with the energy of the very best young American performers," and NPR praised them as "Americana darlings with a roadhouse edge." With a live show that The Boston Globe described as "the perfect balance of sass, sincerity and swing," the Sisters have performed everywhere from A Prairie Home Companion to Mountain Stage and graced festivals from coast to coast in addition to selling out theaters with their annual Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular.

THE NATE GROSS BAND w/s/g MIKE HERMAN
Friday, September 29th
Doors 7pm / Show 8pm / $5 / Cash Bar for 21+
Sponsored by The Daily Star

About Nate Gross:

There are so many great guitar players out there today. We have the world at our fingertips and have access to every learning resource we can imagine but what is skill without soul?

Nate Gross is an old soul. At 35 years old, he has accomplished great success in the industry playing the styles that have been set aside as a new generation of pop music takes over our ears.

The Blues. Jazz. Traditional Country. R&B. Americana. All these elements make up the musical landscape of the 20th Century but seem to be lost until now. Nate Gross fuses these styles together like a cross country trip down route 66.

Like Kieth Richards once said, "If its not about the Blues, then why bother?"

About Mike Herman:

Mike offers up Finger-Pickin'-Good Acoustic Roots & Country Blues. It's like being on the front porch listening to Jorma Kaukonen, Jerry Garcia, and Taj Mahal belting out traditional songs & pickin' their derrieres off!!!

Social Justice Book Club: We Should All Be Feminists

Join us at the Green Toad for the third meeting of the Social Justice Book Club!

We will be discussing 'We Should All Be Feminists,' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Pick up a discounted copy of the book at the Green Toad Bookstore!

Book Synopsis:
"What does “feminism” mean today? That is the question at the heart of We Should All Be Feminists, a personal, eloquently-argued essay—adapted from her much-viewed TEDx talk of the same name—by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the award-winning author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun.
With humor and levity, here Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century—one rooted in inclusion and awareness. She shines a light not only on blatant discrimination, but also the more insidious, institutional behaviors that marginalize women around the world, in order to help readers of all walks of life better understand the often masked realities of sexual politics. Throughout, she draws extensively on her own experiences—in the U.S., in her native Nigeria, and abroad—offering an artfully nuanced explanation of why the gender divide is harmful for women and men, alike.
Argued in the same observant, witty and clever prose that has made Adichie a bestselling novelist, here is one remarkable author’s exploration of what it means to be a woman today—and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists." - GoodReads.com
